Living with anxiety, chronic stress, or a packed schedule with little “down time” can leave you feeling as though life is slipping out of control, robbing you of happiness and peace. Pet sitters juggle busy schedules and are often faced with riveting circumstances that require quick thinking and creative solutions while on the fly.
However, even in today’s fast-paced and stressful environment, it’s possible to live a more serene, purposeful, and productive life. You can free yourself from the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that pull you down instead of lifting you up. Here’s how you can start heading in a positive direction:
Be mindful of your Information Consumption
Every day, we’re inundated with news, statistics, and stories—much of which is irrelevant and often unsettling. While staying informed is important, there’s a limit. To quiet an anxious mind, consider filtering out some of the negative noise that surrounds us.
It’s easy for all of us to use social media as a place to vent. While it’s great to express ourselves, sometimes it can lead to negativity for both the person sharing and those reading. Instead, try to keep things uplifting and positive—it’s amazing how a little kindness can shift our energy and create greater calm.
Focus on Gratitude
Shifting your focus to the blessings in your life can help put anxiety into perspective. A helpful practice is starting a gratitude journal. Every day, jot down five things you are thankful for. The more you do this, the more you’ll notice reasons to be grateful. There is always, always, always something to be thankful for! The whirlwind pace of modern life can prevent a peaceful mind and fuel anxiety. Ask yourself: Why do so many of us let ourselves get caught in a whirlwind of demands? Why do we give in to pressures that lead to such a fast-paced life? Write down your answers and explore them thoughtfully.
“Give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation”. – Brian Tracy
Avoid Procrastination
Everyone puts things off at times, but for some, procrastination becomes a habit. Whether it’s occasional or frequent, putting things off only heightens anxiety. There may be something causing you stress—not because it’s unchangeable, but because you’ve been avoiding taking action to address it.
It’s never pleasant to address a client complaint, so the tendency is to avoid it entirely. Yet, every complaint is an opportunity to improve. Remember: you can’t please everyone so learn to say no to difficult clients and don’t stress over the ones you lose. We love this adage: “stop trying to please everyone…you’re not Tequila!” Take it with a grain of salt (pun intended).
Take time for Stillness
Whether you call it meditation, mindfulness, or quiet reflection, making time for this practice is crucial for peace of mind. What we often call “zoning out” or “daydreaming” is actually spontaneous meditation. The key is learning to do it intentionally. With practice, you can develop the ability to shift your thoughts and reach a state of calm awareness. Surround yourself with Positive People
Avoid individuals who constantly focus on the negative—those who believe the world is doomed and share their pessimism with everyone around them. Instead, seek out optimistic people. Their positive energy is contagious and will help you stay uplifted.
Disconnect from Technology

Many of us have become so reliant on our smartphones, Wi-Fi, and other digital devices that the idea of unplugging sounds daunting. However, taking a break from technology can be incredibly refreshing. Spend that time outdoors, reading, or enjoying an activity you love.
Journal your Thoughts and Take a Rest
Writing down your feelings and thoughts, even for just 10-15 minutes, can be incredibly therapeutic. It helps clarify what’s bothering you and provides an outlet for your concerns. Make sure to be honest in your journaling, as this will lead to greater relief. The famous coach Vince Lombardi once said, “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.” On the flip side, being well-rested gives you the strength to face challenges. Adequate sleep can make you feel more energetic and less anxious.
Return to activities that bring Joy
When anxiety consumes you, it’s easy to forget the things that used to bring happiness. Take some time to list five activities that make you feel good—whether it’s seeing a movie, going for a walk, or spending time with friends. Then, start making time to enjoy those activities again.
Tap into your Creativity
Creative expression can be an effective way to ease anxiety by providing an outlet for your emotions. Whether it’s drawing, writing, painting, or playing/listening to music, engaging in creative activities allows you to channel your feelings and gain a sense of release. Focusing on the creative process can shift your attention away from worries and immerse you in a fulfilling activity.
Never forget your “Why”…why you decided to become a pet sitter. Spending time with companion animals, and getting paid for it, is the primary reason you’re here. And you are appreciated for your dedication to providing professional pet care for them. You are blessed.
