Halloween Safety Tips for Your Furry Friends

As the ghouls and goblins start to gather and your kids get excited for a spook-tacular night of trick-or-treating, don’t forget about your four-legged family members! Halloween can be a confusing — even scary — time for pets, especially when their beloved humans suddenly transform into monsters, superheroes, or walking candy bars.
Here are some helpful tips to ensure your pets stay calm, safe, and happy during the Halloween hubbub:
Costumes & Your Pet’s Comfort
If your dog or cat isn’t accustomed to seeing you or your children in costumes, a sudden appearance in a Darth Vader mask or witch’s hat might send them running for cover.
Ease them into it:
- Introduce masks, hats, capes, and costume accessories in advance.
- Let your pet sniff and investigate these new items at their own pace.
- Use treats and praise to associate these strange new things with positive experiences.
- Speak in a calm, reassuring tone and move slowly if you’re putting on your costume around them.
- Practice a few days ahead of Halloween so they’re not caught off guard on the big night.
Pet Pro Tip: Place costume pieces on the ground and let your pet come to them. Avoid sudden movements or surprises!
Candy & Treat Hazards
While Halloween candy is a kid’s dream, it can be a pet’s nightmare. Chocolate, xylitol (often found in sugar-free gum), and even candy wrappers pose serious health risks to pets.
To keep your pet safe:
- Store candy in a secure location out of paw’s reach.
- Remind children to never share sweets with pets.
- Monitor for signs of ingestion (vomiting, restlessness, diarrhea) and call your vet if you suspect your pet got into the candy bowl.
Dressing Up Your Pet?

Some pets enjoy the extra attention of a costume, but others… not so much.
If you do dress up your dog or cat:
- Choose breathable, non-restrictive costumes.
- Avoid small parts that could be chewed off or swallowed.
- Make sure they can see, hear, and move comfortably.
- Opt for reflective or light-up elements to keep them visible if you’re outside after dark.
Decorations: Fun or Fire Hazard?
Jack-o’-lanterns with real candles can be dangerous for curious noses and wagging tails.
- Use LED or battery-operated candles for a pet-safe glow.
- Keep cords, fake cobwebs, and dangling decorations out of reach.
Doorbell Drama & Escapes
Frequent knocks or doorbell rings, unfamiliar voices, and oddly dressed strangers can stress your pet out — especially dogs prone to guarding or anxiety.
Here’s how to help:
- Keep pets indoors and in a quiet, secure room away from the front door.
- Play calming music or white noise to help block the spooky sounds.
- Double-check that your pet’s collar and ID tags are secure and up to date.
- Microchipping adds an extra layer of protection in case they bolt.
Pet Pro Tip: Consider calming products for pets prone to anxiety. Ask your clients if they have them or start a conversation about it!
Bringing Fido Along for Trick-or-Treating?

If your dog is coming with you on your Halloween Walk, keep these things in mind:
- Stick to sidewalks and avoid approaching doorways where surprises may pop out.
- Keep your dog on a short leash and watch for signs of stress.
- Bring treats and water, and take breaks as needed.
