Emergency Planning for pet sitters and pet owners

We continue to extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers for healing and recovery for those impacted by the destruction of Hurricane Helene. The unpredictable force of nature exposes the vulnerability of our communities and the importance of having an Emergency Preparedness Plan.

Three key elements of a comprehensive Emergency Preparedness Plan include: Family Communication, Evacuation and safely Sheltering in Place. A template for a family plan can be downloaded at: https://www.ready.gov/plan-form

Family communication includes a pre-determined meeting place and alternative means of staying in touch; including an out-of-town friend or relative family members can contact or relocate to their home.

Memorize important numbers in case cell phones are lost or service is disrupted.

If sheltering in place, a 2-week supply of water (a gallon per person and pet per day), non-perishable food, first aid (including pet-related items) ample supply of medications and fire-starting tools and/or off-main solutions for cooking and heating. Other recommended supply items are included @ https://www.ready.gov/kit. For pet-specific items: https://www.aspcapro.org/resource/how-make-pet-first-aid-kit

In the event of evacuation, having a stocked “go bag” is crucial. Evacuating with pets adds additional challenges that require extra planning. Best to evacuate early when advised to do so. This includes packing the car with crates, bowls, bedding, emergency kit, vet records, pet photos and securing their collars with ID. DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND!  Emergency planning for pets is crucial

Knowing where to go in advance is equally important. Pet-friendly hotels will book up fast. If you need to find a pet-friendly emergency shelter, call your local emergency line (211, 311 or 511). Red Cross, the Humane Society of the United States and local animal welfare groups often offer support to residents during a disaster.

Having a pet safety pack and rescue window stickers will assist relief workers if you are stranded and can’t get home to your pets. Order here: Pet Safety Pack | Emergency Rescue | Window Sticker | ASPCA

The intensity of a storm or natural disaster will be frightening for all of you, including your pets. Having an Emergency & Preparedness Plan in advance will make a difference to ensure your safety.
